Animal Hybrid News Poster

Client: School Project, BCIT

Date: September, 2016

Tools: Illustrator, Photoshop, Google

Description: This project was done during my third semester at BCIT. The purpose of this project was to create an animal hybrid poster. We had full creative liberty to choose and create any hybrid animal that we wanted. I decided to make a dragon using a komodo dragon, a goat and a bat. I also decided to give it a news story layout, pretending it was a TV news headline. I also created a knight to give it a more comic effect.

Process: For this project we had to use non-destructive techniques to create our hybrid. I started with a shutterstock image of a Komodo dragon. Then I used the stamp tool to edit a layer above the image to improve how the dragon looked and remove writing from the image. I then proceeded to crop the dragon from the background using masks. After that I added a new background to the image. Next I got an image of a bat, and again edited and cropped the image so that only a wing was visible. I used this process for both wings of the dragon as well as the horns, using an image of a goat. Once I had the dragon I wanted, I changed its colors using a curves layer to make it look darker and a bit green. After this I added a Knight to the image to make it more entertaining. My last step was to create news headlines using Illustrator, to give my image a story.
